Our Story
The story of the Jimmie C. Gardner Foundation began the day Jimmie returned home after nearly 30 years of wrongful incarceration, stepping into freedom with determination and a vision for change but little support. Experiencing the void of stable housing, healthcare, employment, and mental health resources firsthand, Jimmie transformed hardship into a powerful call for justice. His journey from professional baseball to unjust imprisonment fueled his resolve to break cycles of isolation and stigma faced by returning citizens. Drawing on three college degrees earned during incarceration, self-taught legal skills, and years of advocacy, Jimmie launched the Foundation to address barriers that too often block successful reentry and family restoration. Today, the organization champions a new path for returning men - one that cares for the whole person through coordinated programs, community partnerships, and measurable impact. Guided by lived experience and honoring the humanity of all people, the Foundation and Gardner House invite each visitor to join a movement for dignity, second chances, and shared responsibility. Freedom is only the beginning - the journey continues in every life uplifted.
Our Mission & Work
The Jimmie C. Gardner Foundation advances social justice, civil rights, and community restoration across Atlanta and Albany, Georgia. Rooted in lived expertise, our work addresses the real challenges faced by people coming home from incarceration - bridging gaps in housing, physical and mental health, employment opportunities, life skills, and family reunification. Gardner House stands as our first flagship initiative, bringing a complete residential reentry model to life. Each program is guided by Jimmie's journey, national advocacy experience, and collaborations with faith-inclusive and professional partners. Every action is measured by dignified outcomes, transparent reporting, and a commitment to changing systems as well as stories. We invite you to join a movement where restoration is possible, futures are rebuilt, and every contribution accelerates justice.
A Journey Transformed
Jimmie C. Gardner's story began on the baseball fields as a Chicago Cubs draftee and changed course when he lost nearly three decades to wrongful incarceration. During those years, he earned three college degrees, learned the law, and became a mentor to others inside. After his exoneration in 2016, Jimmie made it his life's work to advocate for exonerees and all returning citizens - helping inspire policy reform and setting in motion the founding of Gardner House. His leadership, resilience, and compassion shape every aspect of the foundation, ensuring that each man who walks through our doors finds support, respect, and hope for the future.
